COLLEGE TIMELINE - HOW TO PREPARE FOR COLLEGE
College is more than just an opportunity to learn, it can mean the difference between a low-paying job and a high-paying career! Many studies of the earnings and education indicate that, on average, each year of education at any stage, from grade school through graduate school, adds over 10 percent to an individual’s lifetime earnings. Thus a four-year college degree can be expected to increase an individual’s earnings by almost two-thirds.
“But I’m only in middle school! I don’t need to worry about college yet!”
NOT TRUE! It’s never too early to start thinking about college! Things that you do as early as the sixth or seventh grade can affect your ability to go to college later. There are lots of things you can do right now to help.
Sixth Grade
- Concentrate on getting good grades
- Continue to develop good study habits
- Explore potential career fields and the education you need to work in these careers
- Get involved with activities outside of school including volunteer or paid work
- Visit a local College.

LINEA DE TIEMPO - COMO PREPARARSE PARA LA UNIVERSIDAD
La universidad es más que una oportunidad de aprender, puede significar la diferencia entre un trabajo de salario mínimo y una carrera de salario alto. Muchos estudios de salario y educación indican que, en promedio, cada año de la educación en cualquier fase, desde la educación primaria hasta la escuela graduada de la universidad añade sobre un 10% más al salario de por vida de un individuo. Por ende, se espera que un título de cuatro años de una universidad puede aumentar el sueldo de un individuo por dos tercios.
“¡Pero estoy en la escuela secundaria! ¡No necesito preocuparme de la universidad todavía!"
¡NO ES CIERTO! ¡Nunca es muy temprano para pensar sobre la universidad! Acciones que toma tan temprano como en sexto o séptimo grado puede afectar más tarde su habilidad de ir a la universidad. Hay muchas cosas que puede hacer en estos momentos que le pueden ayudar.
Sexto Grado
- Concéntrese en obtener buenas calificaciones
- Desarrolle buenos hábitos de estudiar
- Identifique áreas que le interese; hágase voluntario(a) y vagase a trabajar con su familia y amigos.
Séptimo y Octavo Grado
- Concéntrese en obtener buenas calificaciones
- Continúe desarrollando buenos hábitos de estudiar
- Explore distintas carreras y la educación que necesita para poder trabajar en las mismas
- Involúcrese en actividades extra curriculares incluyendo trabajo voluntario o un trabajo con paga
